The Hearing Test

If you have a natural problem with your hearing, you will seek out a physician, one who specializes in ear, nose and throat.  I looked up the proper name for this type of doctor and discovered it was an "Otolaryngologist"...try pronoucing that correctly the first time, it took me a few. The primary check point for this office visit would be your physical ears. Now what if you find yourself having issues with your spiritual ears, who you gonna call? If ghost busters come to mind, please don’t call them because they won’t work! Seriously, the Holy Ghost or the Holy Spirit is our recommended hearing specialist and His primary check point is the heart.

Taking a close look at the word "HEART," we find that the word EAR is in the center. It is with the heart that we hear from God. God speaks to us through the Holy Spirit to our hearts. The heart is God's portal to communicate with us. God sent the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, in His name, to teach us all things, and bring all things to our remembrance, everything that He has said to us (John 14:26).

When I feel that I am having difficulty hearing from God, I take time to allow the Holy Spirit to examine my heart. I learned this from my biblical mentor, the Psalmist David, who prayed, "Search me, O God, and know my heart, Try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting." (Psalm 139:23, 24 NKJV). David understood the importance of having his heart examined so that he could be open to the voice of the Lord.

Here is a simple list of just a few things that I have found a thorough examination may reveal…
1. We may not be spending enough time with God.
2. We could be talking too much in times of prayer and not listening.
3. We may have sin in our lives that is clouding our ability to hear.
4. We really don’t have an expectation that God will speak.
5. We are too busy; the noise of the world is louder than the voice of God.
6. We may not have wise counsel speaking into our lives.

Whether the examination reveals one of the things above or something else, we have to be willing to make the necessary adjustments to ensure that there is nothing impairing us from hearing His voice. Many of us are at a crossroads in life where we don’t know if we should to turn left or right, stay still or leap. In order for us to make the best decisions and go down the right path, it is crucial that we hear the voice of the Lord.

When was the last time you had your hearing tested?
